Weekly Update

Good evening,

I am truly hoping for a FULL week of school! While we have been stuck inside a lot lately due to the weather, we have been busy learning about many things! Here is what we are working on this week:

Writing: Beginning prompt writing unit (see letter coming home Monday in the folders)
Reading: Making inferences, character traits, non-literal language
Spelling: continuing spelling sorts/activities, test will be in two weeks
Math: Geometric figures (lines, polygons, triangles, angles)
Science: ending the water cycle unit and beginning states of matter unit

A note about PRISM:
If you still need a box for your child's PRISM project, please contact me and I will send you an order form. The cost of the box is $3.00. (It is a standard white science fair project box). Projects will be due in February, please encourage your child to complete a portion of the project each week to avoid undue stress!

A note about Girls on the Run:
As some of you may have seen on the flyers, Long School will once again be participating in a wonderful program called Girls on the Run. The program is open to girls in grades 3-5 and will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays right after school until approximately 4:30. This is not just a running program, and girls should not feel like they have to compete or be a great athlete in order to join! The program focuses on building self-esteem, promoting a positive body image, and empowering girls to become leaders! Registration is now open and will close on February 12, 2014 at 5:00 P.M. (they have strict deadlines and will not admit any girls after this time). The new season begins on February 19, I would love to have your daughter join our team at Long School. If you have any questions, please contact me!

Have a great week!

How does the temperature of water affect evaporation?

Today in science we conducted an experiment to see if the temperature of water affects evaporation. We concluded that hot water evaporates the fastest!

Weekly Update

It was WONDERFUL to return to school after the extended winter break! On Friday, we wrote New Year's Resolutions, had class meetings, learned about making inferences and probability. We were all excited to begin learning again and enjoyed our visit with Mrs. Maddock. After reading this post, please be sure to scroll down and see all of the pictures and videos that have been added! I have included videos from our sing-a-long assembly, photos from our winter party, and a picture/explanation for the Kindness Cards that you might have heard about.

Important Information about PRISM projects!!!

It's time for PRISM projects! In third grade, projects are not required but are strongly encouraged. All students who complete a PRISM project in my class earn a 1 for superior effort and extra credit in Science. A note will be coming home soon about the projects. If you would like to attend a Q and A session about PRISM, Long School will be holding a meeting on January 14th at 7 P.M. All projects will be due by Tuesday, February 14, 2014. They will remain at school until the night of February 20th, when they are on display in the gym and may be picked up! If you are familiar with the projects and would like a link to the information, click the links below:

Upcoming events:
  • Wednesday, January 15, 2014 is a 1:40 P.M. early release day. Teachers will be meeting in grade level teams to work on our writing curriculum. Lunch will be served, but please make sure your child remembers how to get home that day. Students are encouraged to "dress to impress" (optional).
  • On Thursday, January 16, Dr. Parker will be providing a pizza lunch for our class due to outstanding scores on our monthly evaluate test! Students do not need to bring any money but should bring an alternative lunch if they do not like pizza. They should also bring their favorite drink! Students who would like to buy lunch/drinks in the cafeteria will be allowed to do so.
  • Friday, January 17th will be the new date for our math test! This test will unfortunately cover material learned before winter break... including chapters 7, 23 and 24. The concepts will be time, patterns and probability. Please use the math notebook or websites provided on the blog for review. A study guide will be coming home this week.
  • There will be no school Monday, January 20 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
Here is what we are learning about this week:

Reading: making inferences about characters, character traits and comparing/contrasting
Writing:  publishing our informational text!
Spelling: reviewing synonyms/antonyms, sorts will begin the following week (to allow time to study for our spelling bee participants)
Math: probability, review telling time and patterns, study guide and test Friday 1/17
Science: the water cycle and types of clouds

Lastly, I just wanted to say thank you again for all of the thoughtful gifts and cards for Christmas. I sincerely hope the thank you notes made it home, but if they didn't I just wanted to say thank you again! I know this was a long post so don't forget to scroll down and check the pictures and videos! Have a great week and Happy New Year!

Acts of Kindness Campaign

This year, Long School has kicked off an Acts of Kindness Campaign. Students are encouraged to do at least 12 acts of kindness for others. Mrs. Maddock visited our classroom today and read us a book to get us started! The book was called A Girl With a Cape: The True Story About the Superhero in All of Us by Amy Logan.
On the cover of the book in the lower left hand corner, you can see the Kindness Card. Students can do acts of kindness anytime throughout the day, at home or at school. Whenever they complete an act of kindness, please initial the corresponding number on the card. For example, if your child does three acts of kindness at home, you can initial three spots. If they tell you they did an act of kindness at school, please still initial the card. When they have filled up all 12 spots the card is taken to the office and they will earn a "spot" on the cape wall in the main hallway upstairs (you may have seen it, it looks like the picture on the front of this book). Students came up with wonderful ideas today for how they can show acts of kindness and were eager to get started! If you have questions, please just e-mail me.

Winter Party 2013

We had a great time at our Winter Party! Activities included bingo, a bean bag toss game, painting ornaments, and more! Thank you to all of our parent volunteers for making the party a success! A special thank you to Mrs. Barclay for organizing and planning our party!
