Weekly Update

Good evening!

Happy New Year to all of you! We have been working hard on setting goals, extending patterns in math, learning the stages of the water cycle in science, comparing and contrasting in reading, and revisiting the writing process. We had our class spelling bee on Friday and our two winners were Emma and Abby. Evie and Sam B. will take their places if they are unable to attend. While we want to congratulate our winners, it should be mentioned that every student participated and tried their best! Emma and Abby will represent our class well at the school spelling bee on Friday, January 18th at 9:15 A.M.

2nd quarter report cards came home with your child on Friday. Please sign the green slip on the last page of the report card and return to school this week. If you have any questions or concerns please just contact me. I apologize for the 5 report cards that had symbols/comments cut off. There was a glitch and they are working on resolving the issue. I did attach the comments for the quarter on the last page in the meantime until they can be reprinted.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!
PRISM projects are due this year in February. Third graders are not required to participate, but it is strongly encouraged as they are expected to do a project in upper elementary grades. Each third grade class is supposed to have at least 10 students participate. Right now we have 6!!! All students who complete a PRISM will be given an effort grade of superior on their report card for Science. Last year I granted some time for students to gather resources, print or type text, etc. to try and alleviate it all being done by mom and dad at home! Third graders are much more independent and I encourage all that are considering it to please give it a try. Long is offering a question and answer session Monday night at 7 P.M. regarding PRISM if you are interested in attending. Please let me know if I can get you another entry form or answer any questions.

What we are working on this week:
Math: patterns, telling time, and probability concepts
Spelling: resume weekly word sorts/activities
Science: the water cycle and weather.. we will fill out the study guide and write the test date on the calendar
Reading: Drawing conclusions
Writing: constructed response and prompt writing

Lastly, many students are in need of glue sticks!!! We use them several times a day and are down to our last handful. If you have any extras or wouldn't mind picking them up for your child, we would greatly appreciate it. Thank you so much! Now that the holidays are over please expect weekly blog posts! I value your input,  so please feel free to leave questions/comments, call or e-mail! :) Have a great week!
