Weekly Update

Good evening! 

There is a lot to share this week, so I will jump right in! We will be going on a field trip to the Botanical Gardens on Wednesday and will be eating lunch while we are there. Please send your child with a sack lunch (no lunchboxes) that has your child's name written on it! If you are one of the five confirmed volunteers, I will e-mail you separate details.  Please see below for more specific directions: 

Field Trip Reminder

We are so excited for our upcoming field trip to the Botanical Garden on November 19th. A couple of things to keep in mind:

• Please send a SACK lunch with your child’s name on it, as we will be eating at the Botanical Garden
• Please have your student dress for the weather, as we may be outdoors at some point
• Make sure your student is wearing comfortable walking shoes
• And Last….please make sure your student is here on TIME! The bus will depart from Long at 9:15 am sharp!

Also, Long School will be celebrating our blue ribbon success this week by having a theme each day. Here is a list of what to wear each day should your child wish to participate:

Monday, November 17^th:  We are FLYERS! 

Wear your green and gold to celebrate that we are high achieving Flyers!

Tuesday, November 18^th:  We are CRAZY about Long School!

Wear crazy socks and crazy hair!

Wednesday, November 19^th:  Show your BLUE Ribbon Pride!

Wear blue to celebrate our big award!

Thursday, November 20^th:  Begin with the End in Mind!

Wear your best “Dress for Success” outfit to show how we are leaders in our school! 

Friday, November 21^st:  We are a 2014 National Blue Ribbon School!

All students will be given a Blue Ribbon t-shirt today to wear! 

Other important reminders:

• Progress reports and writing samples will go home this week. Please review, sign and return all materials and send back to school the following day. We will keep the writing samples in the portfolios at school until the end of the year. If you have questions, ask away!
• There will be a math test over Chapter 5, Understanding Division next Tuesday (the day before Thanksgiving Break). Students will need to write division sentences and use strategies based on pictures or word problems. After the break, we will shift our focus to applying multiplication and division and will need to start learning facts to make things easier.

What we are learning about (until Thanksgiving Break):

• Reading- using non-fiction text features and strategies for reading expository text
• Writing-working on paragraphing and organizing chapters for our informational books
• Spelling- all students will take a spelling test after Thanksgiving Break. See calendar in binder for details. 
•  Math- understanding division (making equal groups, writing division sentences, using repeated subtraction, etc. ) This is chapter 5 in the book if you would like more practice. 
• Science- classifying plants, identifying and describing parts of a plant, sequencing the life cycle of plants
